Specialty coffee is no longer a niche topic. The term stands for coffee of the highest quality, from the careful selection of beans and a traceable supply chain to precise roasting and preparation, significantly more elaborate than classic filter coffee. What was a handful of roasteries in Scandinavia and the UK ten years ago is now its own global movement, with international competitions, dedicated expert juries, and a scene that closely watches itself.
For this feature, we've selected five European cities where a lot is happening right now, and in each, we've compiled four addresses that together provide the most complete picture of their coffee culture. Some have received international awards, while others simply impress with the quality in the cup. For some, it's less about the coffee itself and more about what's happening around it – an atmosphere that invites lingering, or a concept rarely found elsewhere. What ultimately matters isn't a single category, but the blend that makes each city so interesting in its own right.
VIENNA
Vienna is the only city on this list whose coffee house culture has been officially recognized as an intangible UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, a status few other cities have earned for their coffee-drinking traditions. For centuries, the Viennese coffee house was more than just a place to drink; it was a living room, workplace, and stage for writers, artists, and thinkers all at once, complete with marble tables, newspapers on wooden holders, and waiters who never rush anyone.
This tradition continues to thrive today, but in parallel, a second generation has emerged in recent years—young, tech-savvy, often internationally trained—who have nothing in common with the old establishments except the same commitment to quality. The result is a city where a two-hundred-year-old coffee house and a six-month-old specialty café are just a few streets apart, both fully deserving of their respective reputations.

BERLIN
Berlin ist eine Stadt der Widersprüche, laut und roh auf der einen Seite, leise und durchdacht auf der anderen. Diese Mischung zeigt sich auch in der Küche der Stadt: Berlin hat nie eine eigene große kulinarische Tradition gehabt wie Wien, dafür aber eine ungewöhnliche Offenheit dafür, fremde Einflüsse aufzunehmen und neu zusammenzusetzen.
Wer aus Kopenhagen, Paris oder Melbourne ein Konzept mitbringt, findet hier schnell Platz, ohne sich groß anpassen zu müssen. Genau das passiert gerade auch beim Kaffee, vor allem entlang des Landwehrkanals in Kreuzberg und Neukölln, wo das Time Out Magazin 2025 das Maybachufer sogar zu einer der coolsten Straßen der Welt gekürt hat. COPENHAGEN
Copenhagen has been considered one of the most influential cities in the international specialty coffee movement for over twenty years, primarily due to the light, Nordic roasting style that originated here and spread worldwide. Unlike Vienna, Copenhagen has almost no old coffee house tradition against which the new generation would have had to distinguish itself. The city was able to build its coffee culture virtually from scratch, with the same Scandinavian pragmatism that also characterizes the city's design and architecture: minimalist, well-thought-out, without unnecessary frills.
Many of the world's most important roasters and baristas started their careers right here, and their influence now extends far beyond the city limits. Anyone drinking coffee in Copenhagen is also experiencing a piece of the blueprint that many other European cities are now using to build their own scenes.

AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam is home to over 180 nationalities in a confined space. This openness also shapes how coffee is consumed here. Unlike many other European cities, the specialty coffee wave didn't originate from its own tradition but was brought in from outside, primarily by Australian expatriates who simply brought their hometown coffee culture with them to Amsterdam.
The Flat White, now an indispensable part of any Amsterdam café, arrived in the city precisely this way, and to this day, its relaxed, international character has endured. With almost half its population between 18 and 45, Amsterdam is also a comparatively young city, which is reflected in the pace of its coffee scene: new concepts emerge faster than elsewhere, and hardly any café remains unchanged for long. Anyone cycling through the city quickly realizes that drinking coffee here is less a ritual and more a way of life – quick, uncomplicated, often enjoyed on the go, while holding the handlebars.

PARIS
Paris, like few other cities, has profoundly shaped the image of coffee drinking, with its terraces where you can sit for hours over a single espresso while life passes by. For a long time, however, this classic café culture was more about tradition than quality; the coffee itself often played a secondary role, almost like a mandatory accompaniment to the true experience of sitting and people-watching. This has noticeably changed in recent years.
A new generation of roasteries and cafés has begun to apply the same meticulous care that Parisian bakeries have always dedicated to their pastries, to the coffee itself, thereby creating a unique, very French take on the specialty coffee movement. Unlike in Berlin or Amsterdam, however, a touch of old Parisian serenity remains: even these new establishments rarely feel rushed, despite their coffee quality now being able to compete internationally.
