Important information on visa applications for the USA

Please note that there may currently be considerable delays in the processing of USA visas.

Due to technical problems on the US consulate side, the processing process is currently taking up to one month.

We would also like to point out that rescheduling appointments is currently not possible or can only be made in isolated cases - and even then is associated with considerable waiting times.

We ask you to take this into account when planning your trip. We will of course process all applications as quickly as possible, but we ask for your understanding that the extended processing times and limited rescheduling options are beyond our control.

We recommend that you submit your visa application early to avoid unnecessary delays.

If you have any questions or uncertainties, please do not hesitate to contact us as usual.

Thank you for your understanding!

Stricter enforcement of age limits for foreign work permits

Several local authorities in China have announced that they will enforce the age requirements for foreign work permits, which have been in place since 2017, more strictly in the future. Specifically, this applies to work permits in categories B and C, for which an upper age limit of 60 years is stipulated.

While in recent years, individual regions have used exemptions, points-based procedures, or discretionary decisions to allow applications from people over the age of 60, these options will no longer be available. According to the authorities, the measure takes effect immediately and applies to new applications, renewals, and changes of employer.

Category A for highly qualified specialists remains unaffected by the age limit, for which there is still no age restriction.

For companies and foreign workers, the tightening of the rules means that personnel, deployment, and visa planning should be reviewed, especially for longer-term contracts and for employees who are reaching or exceeding the age of 60.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone at +49 (0)30 420 258 80 or by email at visa@visumpoint.com.

Visa-free entry for mechanics and technicians still faces challenges in implementation

With Decree No. 12.657/2025, published on October 8, 2025, Brazil has relaxed its entry requirements for foreign skilled workers and expressly allowed technical assignments and technology transfers to be classified as business trips. For nationals of visa-free countries, including German citizens, these activities can therefore generally be carried out without a visa.

However, there are still considerable uncertainties in its practical implementation. To date, there is no detailed implementing regulation that clearly defines how the new rules are to be applied in practice. In addition, the decree is not interpreted uniformly by Brazilian diplomatic missions abroad and border authorities. In individual cases, this has led to problems upon entry, including intensive questioning or even rejection at airports, even though entry was formally based on the new decree.

In view of the inconsistent application of the regulations, increased caution is currently advised. For technical assignments and technology transfers, even for short-term stays, it is still advisable to apply for the special residence or work permit that has been required up to now in order to avoid possible risks upon entry.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone at +49 (0)30 420 258 80 or by email at visa@visumpoint.com.

Brazil extends visa exemption to mechanics and technical personnel

Brazil has extended visa-free entry to mechanics, technicians, and skilled workers traveling to the country for short-term technical assignments or technology transfers, including German citizens. This is based on Decree No. 12.657/2025, published on October 8, 2025, with which Brazil has significantly eased entry requirements for foreign skilled workers.

This means that technical support and installation work can now also be carried out without a prior residence permit. Previously, a special work or residence permit was required for this.

The visa-free stay is limited to up to 90 days per year and can be extended to 180 days. Among other things, it requires a cooperation agreement or a suitable contract as well as a letter of invitation from the Brazilian partner company.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone at +49 (0)30 420 258 80 or by email at visa@visumpoint.com.

Taiwan introduces Digital Arrival Card

Taiwan is now replacing the previous paper entry card with the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC). All foreign travelers, with the exception of holders of a resident visa, an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), or a Diplomatic ID Card, are required to register their details online within 72 hours prior to entry.

The TWAC records personal information, travel, accommodation, and contact details. Once registration is complete, the information is automatically linked to the passport, eliminating the need to present it separately upon entry.

With the switch to the digital process, Taiwan aims to speed up border formalities and make entry procedures safer and more efficient. If required, a visa must still be applied for separately.

We will gladly answer any questions you may have and assist you with the TWAC procedure. Please contact us by phone: +49 (0)30 420 258 80 or by email: visa@visumpoint.com.

Trump introduces $100,000 fee for skilled worker visas

The US government under President Donald Trump has decided on a drastic fee increase for skilled worker visas. As of September 21, 2025, employers must pay a one-time fee of $100,000 for each new H-1B visa application, primarily used by international IT specialists. Existing visas and renewals remain unaffected by the new regulation.

According to the White House, the measure is intended to prevent abuse and protect American workers. However, critics warn that the move could have serious negative repercussions for the US tech industry, which is highly reliant on foreign talent.

The decision has also stirred concern in India, where many IT professionals serve the US market.

New feature: Copy posted worker notification and change traveling person

It is now possible to copy a posted worker notification and only change the traveling person. The other data (e.g., information about the posting) from the original order remains unchanged. The new function is particularly helpful if, for example, you need to apply for a project assignment in the same destination country for several travelers.

To copy, simply click on the “Copy” icon at the end of the line in your order overview. In the copied order, you can then change the traveler at the top of the first page (“Traveler details”) by entering the name and confirming it, just as you would for a new order. Please note: Before submitting, always check all other order details individually for correctness.

Important Change for ESTA Applications: Passport Photo Now Mandatory

Starting June 4, 2025, a new regulation applies to ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications for the United States: uploading a current biometric passport photo is now mandatory.

What’s changing for ESTA applications?

  • All new ESTA applications must include a current, biometric passport photo.
  • The photo must meet U.S. requirements:
    • size: 5x5 cm
    • white background
    • neutral facial expression
    • no glasses
  • The passport photo must be uploaded directly online as part of the application.
  • Applications with incorrect or poor-quality photos will be automatically rejected.

Who is affected by the new rule?

The requirement applies to all new ESTA applications and to applications submitted with a new passport.
ESTA authorizations that have already been approved remain valid and are not affected by this change.

Background and purpose of the change

The new regulation aims to further strengthen the verification of applicants’ identities and prevent misuse. The biometric requirements comply with international standards and are digitally checked to prevent manipulation.

Possible Changes in U.S. Visa Procedures for International Students

Dear Customers,

Recent reports suggest that the U.S. government may introduce more rigorous social media vetting for all international students in an effort to tighten security measures. Furthermore, embassies and consulates might suspend the processing of new visa applications. These reports are based on a confidential cable from Secretary Rubio, which has not been officially confirmed and may be based on leaked information.

In response, Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, emphasized that while such vetting procedures have not been publicly discussed, it is widely known that the U.S. employs all available tools to review visa applications. This includes a thorough investigation of potential applicants to ensure that anyone wishing to enter the U.S. is properly vetted.

What does this mean for international students?

Tammy Bruce stressed that the vast majority of international students in the U.S. should not be concerned about their visas. Most students have not violated any rules and are still welcome to continue their studies in the U.S. The Secretary himself reassured that students intending to start their studies in the fall semester of 2025 should not worry.

How should students prepare?

  • Follow the usual process: Students applying for a visa should continue to follow the regular application process. Every application is expected to be thoroughly reviewed.
  • Patience with delays: Due to possible delays in processing, students should expect longer wait times, particularly during peak application periods.
  • Social media: While it remains unclear whether social media vetting will be implemented, it is advisable to review all public online content to ensure it complies with the visa requirements.

If you have any questions or need support with the application process, we are here to help at any time. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us by email (visa@visumpoint.com) or phone (+49 (0) 30 4202 588 0). We are happy to provide assistance wherever possible to make your visa application process as smooth as possible.

We will continue to track developments on this matter and will provide updates as new information or official statements become available.

Reminder: TDAC becomes mandatory starting May 2025

On May 1, 2025, Thailand will switch to a digital entry procedure. The previous paper card TM6 will be replaced by the new Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). All foreign travelers (with the exception of transit passengers) are required to register their details online at least 72 hours before arrival. The TDAC collects personal details, travel and accommodation information as well as required health data. Once registration is complete, travelers will receive a confirmation that must be presented digitally or in paper form upon entry.

The aim of the changeover is to make border formalities more efficient and to increase security. A visa must still be applied for separately.

Current Developments in Brazilian Immigration Policy: Stricter Controls and New Challenges

Brazilian authorities have recently intensified measures to combat illegal employment practices, as internal investigations revealed cases of labor exploitation under slave-like conditions and the employment of foreigners without valid visas or necessary work permits.

Consequences for Visa and Work Permit Procedures

In response, application review processes have been significantly tightened: stricter controls, additional documentation requirements, and extended processing times now apply. Consulates and embassies are scrutinizing applications with heightened diligence, leading to delays and unexpected follow-up inquiries.

Key Considerations for Visa Applications

  • Purpose of Visa: Precise details about the intended field of activity.
  • Documentation: Complete submission of all required documents.
  • Legal Status: Regularly check the residence status of foreign employees.

New Alien Registration Requirement for Foreign Travelers to the U.S.

Dear Customers,

Starting from April 11, 2025, a new regulation will come into effect in the United States, primarily affecting travelers from abroad. This is known as the Alien Registration Requirement. Registration with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is not mandatory for all travelers. It mainly applies to individuals who are submitting certain applications related to their immigration status or stay in the U.S.

Who does this apply to?

  • Immigration Applications: Individuals applying for a Green Card, changing their status (e.g., Change of Status or Adjustment of Status), or initiating other immigration processes.
  • Work Authorization (EAD): Applicants for work permits must also create a USCIS account.
  • Extension of Stay or Status Changes: Those wishing to extend their stay or change their status while in the U.S. are also required to register with USCIS.
  • Employers and Attorneys: Employers or attorneys who, for example, need an account for the H-1B Visa Lottery must register.
  • Asylum Applications and Humanitarian Programs: Applicants for asylum or programs such as DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), TPS (Temporary Protected Status), etc., are also required to register.

Who does this not apply to?

  • Tourists (B2 Visa): Individuals entering the U.S. as tourists are not required to register with USCIS.
  • Business Travelers (B1 Visa): Business travelers coming temporarily to the U.S. are also not required to create a USCIS account.
  • ESTA Travelers (Visa Waiver Program): Travelers entering the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) are exempt from registration.
  • Visa Applicants Without the Intention to Stay: Those who are only applying for a visa (e.g., B1/B2) and have no intention to stay longer or submit further applications are not required to register.

Applicants who are only applying for a B1/B2 visa or entering with such a visa do not need to register with USCIS.

Update: Important Notice Regarding Entry into the USA - Stricter Controls Under President Trump

Dear Customers,

Political developments in the USA are gaining momentum. President Donald Trump has announced stricter controls and harsher penalties for travelers entering the country with false or insufficient visas. This move highlights the importance of selecting and applying for the correct visa for anyone planning to visit the USA.

In particular, we would like to emphasize that entry with an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is permitted only for specific purposes such as tourism or business travel. The German Foreign Office warns: "A criminal record in the U.S., false statements about the purpose of stay, or even a minor overstay can lead to arrest, detention, and deportation upon entry or exit" (Auswärtiges Amt, as of March 19, 2025). As the authorities have discretionary powers when requesting additional documents, it remains unclear whether these regulations will remain in place permanently or change in the future.

Introduction of an entry fee for travelers to Thailand

Thailand plans to introduce an entry fee for foreign travelers by the end of the year, which was originally scheduled for 2023 but has been postponed multiple times. The purpose of the fee is to provide financial support for improving the country's tourist infrastructure and services. Travelers arriving by air, sea, or land will be required to pay this fee. The planned amount is 300 Baht (around 9 Euros), though this figure may be adjusted in the future.

Along with the fee, vacationers will also be provided with accident insurance, offering protection in case of an accident during their stay. The entire system will be known as the "Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)" and is set to be launched on May 1, 2025. The aim of this digital solution is to streamline and speed up the entry process.

The fee and insurance are not only intended to support tourism infrastructure but also to contribute to sustainable tourism and environmental protection efforts.

We will keep you informed and promptly update you on any significant changes. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone at +49 (0)30 420 258 80 or by email at visa@visumpoint.com.
